The Watermelon

$25.00

The watermelon became a stand-in for the Palestinian flag following the Six-Day War in 1967 where the occupation banned the display of the Palestinian flag and its colors. The ban wasn’t lifted until the Oslo Accords in 1993. Since October 2023, the watermelon symbol (🍉) has been leveraged to circumvent shadowbanning of Palestine and Gaza-related words across all social media platforms.

This image was taken at an action in New York City on November 10th. The person pictured here often brings watermelons to action, cutting them and sharing them as a snack at the end of each rally and march.

C-print on 8×10 glossy paper.
