OG Big Seven
OG Big Seven is a series that captures New Orleans’ joie de vivre through the practice of second lines. Second lines date back to the formation of the Perseverance Benevolent and Mutual Aid Association in 1783, marking the first of many associations that have flourished throughout the city’s history. These voluntary organizations established a local tradition of Black advocacy and celebration in public spaces that carried forward in myriad ways, from the demonstrations and direct actions of the civil rights movement to cultural institutions like the Mardi Gras Indians and Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs. Brass bands, jubilant dancing, and club members decked out in brightly colored suits, feathers, sashes, hats, bonnets, parasols, and banners lead the moving block party. The photographs in this series document the Original Big Seven’s Mother’s Day second line parade in 2025.
